ZeroWaste is a community-based mobile app that helps reduce food waste by making it easy to share surplus food with others nearby. Food waste has serious environmental and social consequences. The app encourages simple, everyday actions that lower our ecological footprint and promote sustainable living.
A vibrant community of food saviors is facing a common struggle - a lack of platform that helps food savers quickly locate surplus food and check its availability and freshness. currently, there’s no reliable way to track where food has been left or get feedback on whether it’s still available.
A map-based social application designed for food saviors. A platform facilitating real-time sharing of information on available surplus food. This tool connects individuals, enabling them to update and access details about the current status of food ready for rescue.
I examined Foodie Save, a platform for buying surplus food from stores, OLIO, a hyperlocal food-sharing app, and WhatsApp groups used for informal food rescue coordination.
I interviewed 6 food saviors, including individuals who rescue and save surplus food, as well as those who generously give it away.
Existing food-sharing solutions do not provide a complete set of features, leading to wasted food and reduced trust among people.
Real-time updates, accurate safety details, and coordination tools are essential to ensure efficiency and reliability.
ZeroWaste uniquely integrates all critical elements: logistics tracking, live communication, availability status, and safety into one comprehensive platform that closes all the gaps identified in the research.

As a food giver, you want to make the process quick and easy. Simply take a photo, add the location, and set the time.

As a food collector, you want an easy search and clear updates on what food you've taken and what's still available.
